Namibia has launched a commemorative banknote honoring the late President Hage Geingob. The 60-Namibian-dollar note acknowledges his 60 years of service to the nation and will function as legal tender. The Bank of Namibia is also set to introduce new currency designs with enhanced security features.
On Wednesday, Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba introduced a commemorative banknote honoring the late President Hage Geingob during a launch event in Windhoek. This initiative recognizes Geingob’s significant contributions to Namibia, following his passing on February 4, 2024, while undergoing cancer treatment.
In his keynote address, Mbumba praised Geingob as a “nation builder” and highlighted the note’s role as a tribute to his enduring influence on the nation’s development. The unique 60-Namibian-dollar banknote, designated a collector’s item, will also serve as legal tender.
Bank of Namibia Governor Johannes Gawaxab remarked on Geingob’s extraordinary dedication, noting that he devoted 60 years to the nation’s service, which the number 60 symbolizes profoundly. Gawaxab observed that Geingob’s commitment spanned his time in exile, his return, and subsequent leadership in an independent Namibia.
Looking ahead, Gawaxab mentioned the central bank’s plans to unveil a new series of banknotes and coins in June, featuring the latest security enhancements to modernize and secure Namibia’s currency. In 2020, the Bank of Namibia marked the 30th independence anniversary with a commemorative 30-Namibian-dollar note, which celebrated a legacy of peaceful governance by featuring the portraits of founding President Sam Nujoma, former President Hifikepunye Pohamba, and Geingob.
The introduction of the Hage Geingob commemorative banknote serves as a tribute to the late president’s extensive contributions to Namibia, symbolizing his commitment and legacy. This effort not only acknowledges his role in nation-building but also anticipates future developments in the central bank’s currency design, ensuring both security and modernity.
