Severe Flooding in Bahía Blanca, Argentina: A Crisis Unfolds

Bahía Blanca, Argentina has been severely impacted by heavy floods following 10 inches of rain in four hours, resulting in six fatalities and widespread evacuations. Efforts to provide assistance are complicated by the ongoing flooding, with local and national resources mobilizing to manage the crisis.

Heavy floods have devastated Bahía Blanca, one of Argentina’s largest cities, inundating parts of the area after experiencing more than four months’ worth of rain within just four hours. By midday Friday, the city recorded over 10 inches of rainfall, with more anticipated later in the day. Tragically, local media report that six fatalities have occurred as a result of these floods.

The inundation resulted in the evacuation of a neonatal care unit at the Penna Hospital, where a disturbing video revealed extensive water inside the facility as staff members transported infants to safety. Reports indicate that hundreds, including 275 individuals from Bahía Blanca and another 800 from nearby Cerri, have been displaced due to the severe weather.

In response to the unfolding disaster, President Javier Milei’s government has deployed army trucks, police from Buenos Aires, and firefighters to assist with relief efforts. However, the ongoing flooding complicated rescue operations significantly. Additionally, the Argentine Navy dispatched vessels and prepared four amphibious vehicles to aid in the rescue operations; government officials noted that further assistance and representatives from Milei’s administration would not arrive until Saturday.

The heavy flooding in Bahía Blanca, prompted by extraordinary rainfall, has led to tragic loss of life and widespread evacuations, notably affecting vulnerable populations such as infants in neonatal care units. The government’s efforts are underway, with military and emergency services mobilizing, albeit encountering challenges due to the continuing deluge. The situation remains critical as more rainfall and risks may arise in the coming days.
