Sudan Files Case Against UAE at World Court Over Alleged Arms Support

Sudan has filed a case against the United Arab Emirates at the World Court, alleging support for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and violations of the Genocide Convention. The UAE plans to seek dismissal of the case, which it deems unfounded. The situation arises amid documented ethnic violence in West Darfur, exacerbated by the ongoing civil war.

Sudan has initiated legal action against the United Arab Emirates at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing it of arming the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and breaching its obligations under the Genocide Convention. This filing is linked to the violent events in West Darfur that have impacted the region deeply, as stated by the ICJ on Thursday.

In response, the United Arab Emirates intends to request the immediate dismissal of the case, asserting that it lacks both “any legal or factual basis,” as articulated by an official statement. The Sudanese foreign ministry has yet to provide comment on this legal action.

Sudanese officials have consistently claimed that the UAE supports the RSF, opposing forces in the ongoing civil conflict. Although the UAE has denied these allegations, United Nations experts and U.S. lawmakers have found them to be credible. The most recent violence in West Darfur involved significant ethnic conflicts, particularly targeting the Masalit community in 2023, extensively reported by Reuters.

The ICJ stated that Sudan’s claims suggest the UAE has “perpetrated and enabled” these attacks through direct support of the RSF. In contrast, a UAE representative characterized Sudan’s application to the ICJ as a mere “cynical publicity stunt” intended to distract from the Sudanese Armed Forces’ alleged involvement in ongoing atrocities in Sudan.

The legal case filed by Sudan against the United Arab Emirates highlights severe allegations regarding support for the Rapid Support Forces amid ongoing ethnic violence in West Darfur. The UAE’s dismissal of the claims as baseless indicates a potential escalation in diplomatic tensions. The court’s proceedings will be critical in addressing these serious accusations under international law.
