Germany Urges Syria to Prevent Escalation of Violence in Ongoing Conflict

Germany has called for a halt to violence in Syria following recent clashes that resulted in over 200 deaths. The German Foreign Ministry emphasized the importance of peaceful solutions and national unity. The interim President of Syria urged pro-Assad fighters to disarm to prevent further escalation of violence while governmental forces regained some control in contested regions.

On March 8, 2025, Germany’s Foreign Ministry appealed to all parties involved in Syria’s ongoing conflict to prevent a “spiral of violence” following two days of fighting that claimed over 200 lives. This disorder erupted as combatants loyal to Syria’s new authorities launched attacks on villages, targeting supporters of ousted President Bashar al-Assad in retaliation for previous assaults on government security forces, according to reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

The German government expressed shock at the deaths reported in western Syria and highlighted the necessity for all factions to pursue peaceful resolutions, national unity, an inclusive political dialogue, and transitional justice. Additionally, during her January visit to Damascus, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock offered support contingent on the protection of minority groups within the country.

The recent violence erupted after an escalation of attacks seen as targeting the transitional government’s security forces along the western coastline. The SOHR documented over 200 fatalities, including around 140 individuals from the attacked villages and members of the Syrian government forces. Although Syrian authorities have not confirmed death tolls, state media cited a security official acknowledging incidents of revenge by civilians against these attacks.

Government forces have reportedly regained control over some regions where the initial confrontations took place, as stated by Defense Ministry spokesman Hassan Abdel Ghani. Anas Khattab, head of Syria’s General Intelligence Service, attributed the planning of recent attacks to former military and security leaders aligned with the previous regime.

Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa called for pro-Assad fighters to disarm before it becomes irreversible. He emphasized the need to centralize weapons under state control, warning against the existence of unregulated armaments. Ongoing clashes have resulted in the most significant violence since the fall of Assad’s government in December 2024, as the newly-established authorities strive to achieve national unity following years of civil war, which has resulted in immense loss of life and displacement.

In summary, Germany has urged for the cessation of violence in Syria amidst an alarming rise in fatalities linked to recent confrontations. The call for peaceful resolution and the protection of minority rights reflects Germany’s stance on fostering stability in the region. As the interim government grapples with ongoing challenges, including calls for disarmament and control over armed factions, the need for a unified approach becomes ever more critical.
