Houthi Rebels Demand Israel Lift Gaza Blockade Within Four Days

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have called on Israel to lift its blockade on Gaza within four days, threatening to resume naval operations against Israel if the blockade continues. This ultimatum follows a series of maritime assaults by the Houthis aimed at supporting the Palestinian cause against Israeli actions amidst the conflict with Hamas.

On Friday, the leader of Yemen’s Houthi rebels issued a statement giving Israel a deadline of four days to lift the blockade on humanitarian aid entering Gaza. This ultimatum suggests a potential resurgence in Houthi naval operations against Israel after a period of reduced hostilities since January, following a ceasefire in the region.

The Iran-aligned Houthi movement previously conducted over 100 attacks targeting maritime shipping from November 2023, expressing solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, an organization designated as a terrorist group by the United States. These operations included sinking two vessels, seizing another, and resulting in the deaths of at least four seafarers, significantly impacting global shipping routes and costs.

The group stated, “We will give a deadline for four days. This deadline is for the [Gaza ceasefire] mediators for their efforts.” The Houthis warned that should Israel maintain its blockade after this timeframe, they would recommence naval operations against the “Israeli enemy.”

Israel had imposed restrictions on aid trucks entering Gaza on March 2, citing allegations that Hamas was diverting aid and hindering access for Palestinians. In response, Hamas expressed support for the Houthi declaration, calling it a courageous decision that underscores ongoing solidarity during the prolonged conflict in Gaza.

Additionally, the Houthis indicated their readiness to undertake armed action if prompted by efforts from the United States and Israel to forcibly displace Palestinians from Gaza, demonstrating their commitment to this issue.

The Houthi rebels have issued a four-day ultimatum to Israel to lift its blockade on Gaza humanitarian aid, warning of a potential resumption of naval attacks if compliance is not met. This development follows a significant period of Houthi-led military engagements in solidarity with Palestinians. Hamas has endorsed this announcement, reflecting a continuous alliance amid ongoing tensions in the region.
