Morocco Ministry Warns of Severe Weather Impacting Road Travel

The Moroccan Ministry of Equipment warns of severe weather causing potential road disruptions due to heavy snow and thunderstorms starting Friday. Citizens are advised to avoid travel, check vehicle conditions, and remain vigilant about flooding and strong winds across numerous provinces.

Morocco’s Ministry of Equipment has issued a warning regarding potential roadway disruptions due to expected severe weather, including heavy snowfalls and thunderstorms, commencing Friday. Passengers are strongly advised to postpone travels in the affected provinces unless in cases of force majeure.

Furthermore, the ministry has emphasized the importance of avoiding nighttime travel and encouraged citizens to ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition, particularly checking critical features such as brakes, battery, lighting, tire pressure, and windshield wipers.

Drivers are also advised to remain vigilant for flooded road sections, especially in low-lying areas and those crossing dry riverbeds or flood channels, and to refrain from driving over submerged fords during heavy floods. Additionally, motorists should adhere to speed limits, avoid sudden maneuvers, and maintain safe distances between vehicles.

The Ministry’s warning is based on forecasts from the meteorological office predicting substantial snowfall at elevations exceeding 1,500 meters, with accumulations between 25 to 60 centimeters in provinces like Ifrane, Azilal, Beni Mellal, and more. Furthermore, heavy thunderstorms and rainfall amounts of 25 to 130 millimeters are anticipated in several provinces, including Tangier Asilah and Chefchaouen.

Strong winds are expected across a wide range of provinces, including Chefchaouen, Tangier, and Casablanca, from Friday night through Monday, affecting various regions such as Marrakech and Essaouira. Vigilance is warranted given the extent and potential impact of these weather conditions on travel and safety.

In summary, Morocco’s Ministry of Equipment has alerted citizens to expect severe weather, including heavy snowfall and thunderstorms, which may lead to significant roadway disruptions. Travelers are urged to check vehicle safety, avoid nocturnal travel, and heed local authority advisories. The potential for flooding and strong winds underscores the need for precautionary measures to ensure safety on the roads during this period.
