Pakistan Calls on Syria to Comply with Chemical Weapons Resolution

Pakistan has called on Syria to eliminate chemical weapons in accordance with the Chemical Weapons Convention. Ambassador Munir Akram urged for adherence to international regulations and the need for a Syrian-led political process. Pakistan condemned the use of chemical weapons and highlighted the importance of dialogue in addressing the issue while preventing terrorist access to such weapons.

On a recent occasion at the United Nations, Pakistan urged the new interim authorities in Syria to eliminate chemical weapons and comply with the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). Ambassador Munir Akram emphasized the importance of seizing the current moment to resolve outstanding issues regarding chemical weapons in Syria during a Security Council debate focused on the Middle East.

Ambassador Akram advocated for ongoing dialogue, cooperation, and strict adherence to the CWC and Security Council resolutions to expeditiously conclude the matter of Syria’s chemical weapons. The existing resolution mandates Syria to fully declare and eliminate its chemical arsenal under the supervision of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), warning of potential consequences outlined in Chapter VII of the UN Charter for international peace and security threats.

Since joining the CWC in 2013, Syria’s compliance has raised concerns within the chemical weapons watchdog regarding the accuracy and completeness of its submissions. Ambassador Akram condemned the use of chemical weapons universally, asserting Pakistan’s view of the CWC as a cornerstone of global arms control and disarmament.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the objectives of the CWC and the impartial effectiveness of the OPCW’s verification mechanisms. Furthermore, Ambassador Akram expressed support for an inclusive, Syrian-led political resolution facilitated by the UN, stressing the importance of upholding Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He also highlighted the need to prevent terrorist access to weapons of mass destruction, including chemical weapons, per Security Council resolution 1540 (2004).

In conclusion, Pakistan is calling for Syria to take decisive action to dismantle its chemical weapons arsenal and ensure compliance with international regulations. This approach emphasizes the need for cooperation within the framework of the Chemical Weapons Convention and highlights the importance of a political solution led by the Syrian people. Pakistan’s commitment to arms control and disarmament underlines the broader implications for international peace and security.
