The voluntary group Women in Public Life (WiPL) highlights that female representation in the States of Guernsey is around 20%, which is significantly lower than Jersey’s States Assembly, where it stands at approximately 43%.
Shelaine Green, chair of WiPL, noted that the current representation is concerning, with Guernsey positioned just above countries like Saudi Arabia and Turkey in female government participation. She expressed that without adequate representation, women’s perspectives and life experiences may be overlooked in matters that affect the entire island.
If Guernsey were included in the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s rankings, it would be ranked 123rd concerning the percentage of women in national parliaments, while the UK Parliament occupies the 26th position with 40.5%. Ms. Green emphasized that women have equal chances of electoral success as their male counterparts, yet more women need to step forward initially.
To assist in this endeavor, WiPL is hosting a free Train to Campaign program aimed at enhancing campaigning skills on March 23. Ms. Green urged potential candidates, stating that any woman contemplating standing in June 2025 should reach out for guidance. The organization is prepared to provide insights into current issues, the election process, and campaign planning, alongside moral support, emphasizing that “your island needs you.”
