Prime Minister Modi’s Upcoming Mauritius Visit: A Milestone in Bilateral Relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mauritius on March 11-12 for National Day celebrations, fostering bilateral ties through project inaugurations and MOUs. His engagement includes interactions with the Indian community, and participation in cultural ceremonies. The visit is a continuation of strong relations and strategic cooperation between India and Mauritius.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Mauritius on March 11-12 is poised to be a significant event, emphasizing the strong bilateral ties between India and Mauritius. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that this visit as the Chief Guest for the National Day celebrations will provide an opportunity for both nations to evaluate existing relations and shape future interactions.

During his stay, Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate various projects supported by India and witness the signing of multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) concerning capacity building, bilateral trade, combating cross-border financial crimes, and supporting small and medium enterprises. The Prime Minister is also scheduled to engage with the Indian community and cultural organizations in Mauritius.

In conjunction with the celebrations on March 12, an Indian naval ship will be stationed in Mauritius, and the Aakash Ganga skydiving team from the Indian Air Force will perform during the ceremonies. Prime Minister Modi will arrive early on March 11, receiving a ceremonial welcome upon landing.

He plans to visit the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden to honor former Prime Ministers Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and Sir Anerood Jugnauth. A meeting with the newly appointed President of Mauritius, Dharambeer Gokhool, will be followed by bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Ramgoolam and other political leaders.

The Foreign Secretary also reflected on previous support extended to Agalga Island, highlighting the impact of improved connectivity facilities established through past agreements which aided timely relief operations following a cyclone in 2022. Misri noted that this collaboration has significantly strengthened the responsiveness and support extended to the island’s residents during crises.

Mauritius’ Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam expressed honor in hosting Prime Minister Modi, praising the visit as a clear indicator of the robust relationship between the two nations. Prime Minister Modi’s engagement includes being the Guest of Honour during the flag-raising ceremony followed by cultural performances highlighting Mauritius’ diversity.

Having previously visited Mauritius in 2015, this trip marks another significant opportunity to reaffirm commitment to further beneficial engagements between India and Mauritius. At present, India maintains a pivotal role in Mauritius’ socio-economic landscape, with a large Indian-origin population, extensive cultural ties, and significant economic relations, including the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement, signed in February 2021.

With the introduction of various Indian Public Sector Units operating in Mauritius, along with cultural institutions promoting Indian heritage, both nations are committed to fostering their unique friendship, which is underpinned by mutual interest and cooperation.

In summary, Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Mauritius heralds an important step in strengthening bilateral relations, marked by various inaugurative ceremonies, discussions on cooperative initiatives, and cultural engagements. This visit not only highlights the historical ties between the two nations but also sets a roadmap for future collaborations in governance, trade, and cultural exchange, reaffirming the enduring partnership and shared values.
