Addressing the 60th Anniversary Remembrance Service for Dr. J. B. Danquah at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Kyebi, former President Akufo-Addo highlighted Dr. Danquah’s advocacy for the rule of law as essential for liberty and individual freedom in Ghana. He underscored that Dr. Danquah’s efforts to embed the rule of law within the nation’s political framework are crucial, stating, “Today, it stands as a central feature of Ghanaian politics, which we must never renounce.”
During the service, former President Akufo-Addo introduced a collection of 60 commemorative statements that honor Dr. J. B. Danquah’s legacy. He lamented that despite Dr. Danquah’s vast contributions to Ghana, his reputation continues to suffer from unwarranted controversies. Meanwhile, Minority Leader Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin condemned the recent disrespectful comments regarding Dr. Danquah made in Parliament and criticized an invasion at the home of former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin called for a rejection of hate speech and for a focus on national unity as avenues for development. He stated, “Since the 1940s, no group of people has suffered a smear campaign as enduring as that against Daddy Danquah and his people.” He advocated for dignity, love for Ghana, and emphasized that what unites citizens is stronger than divisive forces, urging all to embrace democracy as a continual struggle.
