Can Solar Power Make Namibia’s Mining Sector More Sustainable?

Namibia’s mining sector, including uranium and copper, is evolving with solar power integration via Appian Capital’s acquisition of Rosh Pinah Solar Park. The initiative will reduce energy costs, support expansion, and significantly lower carbon emissions, encouraging greater energy independence for Namibia.

Namibia boasts a significant mining sector, primarily focusing on uranium, copper, diamonds, and other precious resources. The introduction of solar power could greatly enhance the sustainability of these operations. Recently, Appian Capital Advisory LLP acquired a majority share in Rosh Pinah Solar Park from Emesco Energy, marking a pivotal move toward cleaner energy in mining.

This acquisition aims to power the Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation’s operations with renewable energy, reflecting Appian’s dedication to decarbonising its investment portfolio. The deal coincides with Rosh Pinah Zinc’s RP2.0 expansion project, which intends to markedly increase ore production.

The solar initiative will provide 30% of the energy needed for the mining project’s expansion and ensure energy costs remain fixed, leading to an 8% reduction in energy expenses over the next 15 years. Furthermore, Appian plans to expand the solar facility’s capacity from 5.4MW to 16.3MW, significantly enhancing the mine’s sustainability and reducing carbon emissions by 14,000 tons annually.

This reduction in emissions is equivalent to the impact of planting approximately 20,000 trees, signifying substantial progress in environmental conservation efforts. Emesco Energy will maintain operations at the solar plant, ensuring a successful rollout of the expansion while leveraging Appian’s experience from projects in Brazil.

Namibia, which has traditionally depended on energy imports, stands to gain considerably from this initiative, as it enhances local energy production capabilities in the country.

The strategic acquisition of the Rosh Pinah Solar Park by Appian Capital Advisory LLP epitomizes a significant shift towards sustainable mining practices in Namibia. By integrating solar energy into operations, the project enhances both environmental responsibilities and economic resilience for the mining sector, showcasing a successful model for clean energy utilization. This initiative not only supports the expansion of mining activities but also significantly contributes to local energy independence.
