Tropical cyclone Jude made landfall on the northern coast of Mozambique on Sunday night, near the port city of Nacala. As reported by the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC), the cyclone was positioned approximately 100 kilometers inland by mid-morning on Monday, with wind speeds reaching 65 knots (120 kilometers per hour). The storm is anticipated to continue moving westward, entering Malawi by Tuesday afternoon, though its intensity is expected to lessen to below 35 knots.
The Nampula coastal districts, including Nacala, Mossuril, Memba, Mozambique Island, and Monapo, are forecasted to experience heavy rainfall. Rainfall amounts could range from 100 to 200 millimeters within a 24-hour period, following rainfall that commenced across Nampula province on Saturday night.
The National Disaster Management Institute (INGD) of Mozambique has indicated that over 341,000 individuals in the province are at a heightened risk due to the cyclone. In response to the situation, the provincial directorate of education has mandated the closure of all schools throughout Monday.
The cyclone has resulted in the destruction of electricity pylons, leaving approximately 40,000 customers of the public electricity company, EDM, without power as of Monday morning. Additionally, Mozambique Airlines (LAM) has cancelled all domestic flights to the northern regions, impacting routes to Nampula, Nacala, and Pemba. LAM has assured affected passengers that they will be accommodated for future travel once conditions improve.
