GNU Denies Claims of Migrant Resettlement in Libya

The Government of National Unity (GNU) of Libya has denied claims regarding resettling migrants, calling the reports “misleading and baseless.” They reaffirmed their rejection of such proposals, emphasizing a commitment to collaboration with the EU based on national sovereignty. The GNU advocates for a strategy addressing the root causes of migration through economic investment and warns against misinformation.

The Government of National Unity (GNU) of Libya has officially denied allegations regarding plans to resettle irregular migrants within the country. These claims, reportedly made by Local Governance Minister Badr Al-Din Al-Toumi, have been characterized by the government as “misleading and baseless.”

In a statement issued on Sunday through the Tebyan platform, the GNU reiterated Libya’s established stance on migration. The officials noted that during the Mediterranean Migration Forum held in Tripoli in July 2024, Libya unequivocally rejected any proposals for the resettlement of migrants, affirming their commitment to collaborating with the European Union and international partners.

The GNU emphasized the necessity for a broader strategy to address migration effectively, highlighting that economic investment in nations confronting profound social and financial difficulties is vital. They argued that focusing solely on security measures is insufficient and poses considerable risks, thereby advocating for a comprehensive approach founded on sustainable development and international cooperation.

Furthermore, Libyan authorities called on media organizations and the public to corroborate information through official channels, stressing the importance of avoiding the proliferation of misinformation related to sensitive national matters.

The GNU’s firm denial of migrant resettlement plans signifies Libya’s commitment to managing migration responsibly. The emphasis on sustainable development and collaboration with international partners highlights the government’s recognition of migration as a complex issue requiring multifaceted solutions. By urging verification of information, the GNU aims to mitigate misinformation that could undermine national interests.
