IGAD Urges Restraint and Dialogue to Mitigate Tensions in South Sudan

IGAD’s Executive Secretary, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, has issued a statement urging restraint and dialogue in light of rising tensions in Nasir County, South Sudan. The organization is committed to the full implementation of the R-ARCSS and plans to assess the situation on the ground with a high-level delegation. On March 5, 2025, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), through its Executive Secretary H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, voiced serious concerns regarding the heightened tensions and clashes in Nasir County, South Sudan. These incidents jeopardize the progress achieved under the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) and threaten the overall peace in the nation.

H.E. Dr. Workneh emphasized the necessity for all involved parties to maintain maximum restraint and to reaffirm their commitment to the R-ARCSS. He underscored that dialogue and reconciliation are essential for sustainable peace and urged the South Sudanese government and local authorities to enhance their de-escalation and reconciliation efforts.
