Libya Refutes Claims of Resettlement Plans for Undocumented Immigrants

Libya’s Government of National Unity has refuted claims of resettling undocumented immigrants within its territory, calling the reports “misleading”. The statement follows a meeting with the International Organization for Migration and reaffirms Libya’s commitment to combat illegal immigration while respecting sovereignty. Prime Minister Dbeibah also supports UN stabilization efforts in the country.

On March 10, the Government of National Unity (GNU) of Libya officially dismissed reports suggesting plans to resettle undocumented migrants within the country. They described the claims as “misleading” and “completely false”. This statement came after social media circulated comments attributed to Minister of Local Governance Badr Al-Din Al-Toumi following a meeting with Nicoletta Giordano from the International Organization for Migration in Libya.

The GNU reaffirmed its firm stance against illegal migration and reiterated its rejection of immigrant resettlement proposals, a position previously asserted during the Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum in July 2024. Furthermore, Libya emphasized its dedication to collaborating with the European Union and international partners to effectively manage illegal immigration while respecting national sovereignty and human rights.

Since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has emerged as a key departure point for many African migrants attempting to reach European shores via the Mediterranean Sea. In February, Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah reinforced his government’s support for United Nations efforts aimed at stabilizing Libya during a meeting with the newly appointed Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Hanna Serwaa Tetteh.

The meeting marked Tetteh’s first formal engagement since assuming her role, illustrating Libya’s ongoing interaction with international bodies to address pressing issues, including migration and national security.

In summary, Libya’s Government of National Unity firmly denies any plans to resettle undocumented migrants within its borders, labeling such reports as unfounded. The government maintains its commitment to combating illegal immigration through international cooperation, underlining its respect for national sovereignty and human rights. The ongoing discussions with UN representatives signal a proactive approach towards national stability and regional migration challenges.
