Reports indicate that the Rwanda-supported rebels have now captured Nyabwindo village, which is strategically located near the town of Walikale in North Kivu, approximately 100 kilometers north of Goma.
Walikale is critical for the DRC government as it houses the only operational industrial mine generating significant tax revenue. Alain Uaykani from Al Jazeera emphasized, “Walikale is very important for the government as it is the only place where the government has the industrial mine.”
The DRC military is facing major challenges, highlighted by the defection of a government-aligned group, Group Kabido, which has joined forces with M23 fighters. This alliance demonstrates internal discord within the DRC army, as Group Kabido accuses the Kinshasa government of mismanagement. Uaykani remarked that this situation allows M23 to exploit the chaos effectively.
Humanitarian concerns are escalating as the United Nations has reported that violent clashes have targeted hospitals and civilian infrastructure, resulting in the displacement of hundreds of thousands. OCHA noted that several medical centers were attacked, threatening local security and forcing closures of hospitals and schools in various regions. Recent clashes in Masisi district have resulted in civilian casualties and further displacements.
In response to the M23’s advances, DRC authorities have instituted a $5 million reward for information leading to the arrest of M23 leaders, including Corneille Nangaa, Bertrand Bisimwa, and Sultani Makenga, all convicted in absentia of serious crimes. Additionally, a separate bounty of $4 million is placed on information regarding their accomplices. The toll of the ongoing conflict has surpassed 7,000 fatalities since January, affecting a significant number of civilians.
The M23 is among numerous armed factions in eastern DRC competing for control over valuable mineral resources. After a period of inactivity, the group renewed hostilities in 2021 and has since captured vast areas of territory leading to accusations of Rwandan support, a claim that Kigali denies.
