The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has engaged 32 individuals in questioning as part of its investigation concerning former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. This inquiry focuses on money laundering and has revealed over RM170 million in various currencies and gold, discovered in multiple safehouses.
An anonymous source informed the New Straits Times that an additional 23 individuals are scheduled to provide statements. Moreover, four persons who were previously interviewed have been summoned again for further questioning. The MACC is also in the process of acquiring bank records from several financial institutions and is currently awaiting those documents.
Originally, the MACC planned to obtain a second statement from Ismail Sabri on March 5; however, he reported being unwell. His appointment was postponed to March 7, but he again provided a medical certificate extending his sick leave to March 12. To address the delays, the MACC interviewed Ismail Sabri’s physician to evaluate the legitimacy and severity of his health concerns.
On March 1, Ismail Sabri underwent five hours of questioning at the MACC headquarters concerning the significant funds allocated for promotional and publicity efforts during his administration from 2021 to 2022. He was subsequently hospitalized due to elevated blood pressure after collapsing at his residence.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has previously stated that Ismail Sabri is a suspect in this investigation and must clarify details regarding the assets he declared in February.
