President Mahama Strengthens Ties with Burkina Faso to Combat Terrorism

President John Mahama pledges collaboration with Burkina Faso to combat terrorism during his visit to Ouagadougou. He highlights the necessity of regional cooperation in addressing security threats and strengthens bilateral relations for economic progress. The discussions included significant security considerations relevant to the Sahel region.

President John Mahama has reaffirmed his dedication to collaborating with Burkina Faso in combating terrorism. He highlighted the pressing security threats posed by terrorism and underscored the importance of regional cooperation, likening terrorism to a cancer that, if left untreated, can proliferate. This statement was made during his visit to Ouagadougou for bilateral discussions with Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the leader of Burkina Faso, on March 10, 2025.

The President stated, “In Africa we say when your neighbor’s house is on fire, you have to help him to quench it otherwise it will spread to your own house.” He remarked that terrorism, which began in Mali, has progressively encroached into Niger and Burkina Faso, thus necessitating collaborative efforts to address this concern.

In addition to security discussions, President Mahama’s visit aimed to bolster bilateral relations and promote economic growth and trade liberalization between Ghana and Burkina Faso. He engaged with Captain Ibrahim Traoré regarding the security dynamics in the Sahel, as well as broader geopolitical issues affecting the region.

Accompanying the President were several officials, including Col. Larry Gbevlo Lartey, Presidential Envoy to the Sahel, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Executive Secretary Dr. Calistus Mahama, Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations) Stan Dogbe, Senior Presidential Advisor Joyce Mogtari, and Deputy Spokesperson Shamima Muslim. These discussions reflect the commitment of Ghana and Burkina Faso to work collaboratively in addressing common security challenges.

President Mahama’s commitment to combating terrorism alongside Burkina Faso is a significant step towards enhancing regional security. His visit not only emphasizes the imperative of collaboration in fighting terrorism but also seeks to strengthen economic ties between the two nations. The presence of high-level officials denotes the serious approach both countries are taking toward these critical discussions.
