Syria’s interim President has signed an agreement to integrate Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces into state institutions, potentially bringing SDF-controlled territory under government control. This development follows the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, leading to a new transitional government.
Recent developments in Syria indicate that the new leadership has reached a significant agreement with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). This accord aims to integrate the SDF into state institutions, suggesting that SDF-controlled territories may soon come under the governance of the Syrian government. The announcement was made via the press service from the Syrian President’s Office and was also reported by Al Jazeera.
The agreement was officially signed by Syria’s interim President, Ahmad al-Sharaa, and Mazloum Abdi, the leader of the Syrian Democratic Forces. It underlines the unity of Syria, mandating the incorporation of all civilian and military institutions in northeastern Syria into the country’s administration, including vital assets such as border crossings, the airport, and oil and gas fields.
The Syrian Democratic Forces were established in 2015 with backing from the US-led coalition in Syria, primarily comprised of Kurdish self-defense units along with various Syrian Arab opposition and other ethnic units. The SDF has maintained control over an autonomous region in northeastern Syria since 2015, which is marked in yellow on region maps.
In another context, on December 8, 2024, the Syrian opposition succeeded in entering Damascus and ousting President Bashar al-Assad, who had held power for 24 years before escaping to Moscow. Following this event, the rebels established a transitional government led by Muhammad al-Bashir, associated with the “Salvation Government” formed in 2017 in opposition-controlled territories, mainly in Idlib. Ahmad al-Sharaa, the leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, has been designated the interim president of Syria.
The integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces into state institutions marks a pivotal moment in Syria’s political landscape, aligning previously autonomous regions under the Syrian government’s authority. This development, alongside the overthrow of President Assad, could signify a shift in governance and stability in the region, as new leadership seeks to establish control and united administration across Syria.
