On International Women’s Day, Fatih Ak, Türkiye’s ambassador to Uganda, emphasized the significance of essential hygiene for women and girls during a recent event in Kampala. The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) donated vital equipment for producing reusable sanitary pads, thereby assisting young women in obtaining basic hygiene products to support their economic independence.
The equipment, which includes sewing and overlock machines, was given to Msichana Uganda, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young girls and women. Ambassador Ak expressed pride in this initiative, stating, “As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we are delighted to mark another successful project under TIKA here in Uganda,” highlighting the developmental cooperation that strengthens Turkey-Uganda relations.
Ak outlined TIKA’s significant impact in Uganda, noting that since the early 2000s, the agency has completed 94 projects benefiting communities. With this current initiative, he hopes Msichana Uganda can improve women’s quality of life, emphasizing that TIKA’s contributions would foster further support for Ugandan women.
Murat Cetin, TIKA’s country coordinator, reported that the donated sewing equipment and specialized fabrics would facilitate employment opportunities and raise hygiene awareness among young women. “TIKA has contributed five sewing machines and two overlock machines together with a significant amount of specialized washable nano-technology fabrics to meet hygiene standards,” he remarked.
Winnie Nakandi, the director of Msichana Uganda, expressed gratitude for the Turkish support, underscoring that empowering women is crucial to achieving justice and social prosperity. She stated, “We remain steadfast in our struggle to support underprivileged girls and women to access reusable pads and render their contributions visible across all sectors.” Reusable sanitary pads offer a cost-effective alternative to disposable products, which are often unaffordable for low-income individuals.
