The initial hearing for Mondlane, planned for today, had been postponed upon a request submitted by an agent representing him at the PGR. This rescheduling to Tuesday at 9:00 am was confirmed by the PGR source. Mondlane is set to be questioned in connection with a criminal case that was filed last year.
This case is not the only one against Mondlane; it follows a series of protests he has led since October challenging the recent election results. The former presidential candidate has remained silent since a significant incident on Wednesday, when police used gunfire to disperse a crowd accompanying him, forcing his retreat.
In another legal development, on November 22, Mondlane was demanded to compensate 1.5 million euros for damages resulting from his demonstrations in Maputo province. Additionally, the Public Prosecutor’s Office has filed a separate claim for 32,377,276.46 meticais (approximately 486 thousand euros) regarding damages specifically incurred in the capital.
The PGR previously opened proceedings in January concerning Mondlane’s self-declared “presidential decree,” which was criticized for violating constitutional principles. This decree, published in the “Jornal do Povo,” outlined 30 measures and suggested that citizens form an autonomous court to hold accountable certain police units accused of committing extrajudicial killings.
Mondlane, identified as the second most-voted candidate in the October 9 elections, is spearheading a significant challenge to the electoral results, which have sparked the most intense political unrest in Mozambique since the inception of multi-party elections in 1994. The elections were won by Daniel Chapo, who has since been inaugurated as Mozambique’s fifth president. During ongoing protests, reports indicate at least 353 individuals have died due to clashes, while the government acknowledges 80 fatalities.
