An Argentine court is trialing seven healthcare professionals for alleged negligence in the death of Diego Maradona. The defendants, including a neurosurgeon and psychiatrist, face manslaughter charges, with potential sentences of up to 25 years. Maradona’s family is actively seeking justice as proceedings unfold.
On Tuesday, an Argentine court initiated the trial of seven healthcare professionals accused of negligence in the death of soccer legend Diego Maradona, who passed away at the age of 60. The professionals were responsible for Maradona’s care during a cardiac arrest that occurred on November 25, 2020, at his residence outside Buenos Aires.
The trial will be overseen by a panel of three judges who must determine if the defendants, including a neurosurgeon and a psychiatrist, are guilty of manslaughter. Should they be convicted, the individuals face a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. Maradona’s family members, including his daughters and former partner, were present in the courtroom, visibly emotional during the proceedings.
Prior to the trial’s commencement, Verónica Ojeda, Maradona’s former partner, posted a video on social media showcasing his son, Diego Fernando, wearing a shirt emblazoned with Maradona’s face and the word “justice.” Key among the accused is neurosurgeon Leonardo Luque, who served as Maradona’s personal physician in the last four years of the footballer’s life and performed a critical surgery just weeks before Maradona’s death.
In addition to Luque, the trial involves six other professionals: psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, psychologist Carlos Díaz, Nancy Forlini (medical coordinator), Mariano Perroni (nursing service representative), doctor Pedro Di Spagna (treatment monitor), and nurse Ricardo Almirón. It is noteworthy that another nurse, Gisela Madrid, is set to be tried by jury later this year.
The trial of the healthcare professionals overseeing Diego Maradona’s care has garnered significant attention, reflecting the family’s quest for accountability following the soccer star’s tragic death. With serious charges of negligence on the table, the outcome of the trial may set precedents in medical accountability standards. Maradona’s legacy and the bereaved family continue to be at the forefront of this critical case.
