Bolivia Faces Humanitarian Crisis as 40 Die from Flooding in Rainy Season

Bolivia’s rainy season has resulted in 40 fatalities and seven missing persons due to floods and landslides. Authorities report over 163,000 families are homeless, with 105 municipalities affected. Efforts are underway to evacuate residents from high-risk areas.

The rainy season in Bolivia, which commenced in November, has led to severe flooding, resulting in the deaths of 40 individuals and the disappearance of seven others, according to recent reports. Deputy Minister of Civil Defence Juan Carlos Calvimontes has indicated that the toll may increase following a landslide in La Paz that damaged around 80 homes.

In response to the dangers posed by potential further landslides, authorities have mandated the complete evacuation of affected regions and advised residents to avoid restricted areas. The latest reports reveal that 163,193 families have been displaced or rendered homeless, primarily in the department of La Paz.

Since the onset of the rains, 105 municipalities have been affected, with 37 of them declaring a state of disaster due to the severe weather conditions. This season underscores the significant impact of adverse climatic events on vulnerable communities in Bolivia.

In summary, Bolivia is facing a critical humanitarian crisis as the current rainy season has led to considerable casualties, widespread homelessness, and significant infrastructure damage. The government’s proactive measures, including evacuations and disaster declarations, demonstrate the urgent need to address the impacts of natural disasters. Continued vigilance and support for affected families will be essential as the rainy season progresses.
