Cuba celebrated its inaugural victory at the women’s world boxing championship with Melani Girado competing in the 57-kilogram category. Girado achieved her win against Tanzania’s Halima Vunjabei, who did not appear for the bout. This match took place in Nis, Serbia, where the championship is being hosted until Sunday.
As reported on the IBA website, Girado’s next opponent will be determined by the outcome of a match between Uzbekistan’s Nigina Uktamova and Georgia’s Kasumova. In addition to Girado, Cuba’s competitors include Yoana Rodriguez (81 kg) and Dayira Mesa (75 kg), who are scheduled to fight on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Rodriguez will meet Uzbekistan’s Sokhiba Ruzmetova, while Mesa will face Russia’s Anastasia Shamonova. Coaches Ivan Sadiel Horta del Rey and Santiago Suarez lead the team, emphasizing their commitment to women’s boxing in Cuba, which they acknowledge began later than in many countries. They expressed confidence in their support system and dedication to advancing this discipline.
