Cuba’s first participation in the women’s world boxing championship began positively with Melani Girado’s victory over Halima Vunjabei. Two other competitors, Yoana Rodriguez and Dayira Mesa, are set to fight against strong opponents. Coaches express confidence in advancing women’s boxing in Cuba despite its recent inception.

Cuba celebrated its inaugural victory at the women’s world boxing championship with Melani Girado competing in the 57-kilogram category. Girado achieved her win against Tanzania’s Halima Vunjabei, who did not appear for the bout. This match took place in Nis, Serbia, where the championship is being hosted until Sunday.

As reported on the IBA website, Girado’s next opponent will be determined by the outcome of a match between Uzbekistan’s Nigina Uktamova and Georgia’s Kasumova. In addition to Girado, Cuba’s competitors include Yoana Rodriguez (81 kg) and Dayira Mesa (75 kg), who are scheduled to fight on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Rodriguez will meet Uzbekistan’s Sokhiba Ruzmetova, while Mesa will face Russia’s Anastasia Shamonova. Coaches Ivan Sadiel Horta del Rey and Santiago Suarez lead the team, emphasizing their commitment to women’s boxing in Cuba, which they acknowledge began later than in many countries. They expressed confidence in their support system and dedication to advancing this discipline.

Cuba has made a successful start at the women’s world boxing championship, as evidenced by Melani Girado’s victory. The ongoing participation of Yoana Rodriguez and Dayira Mesa reflects the growing support for women’s boxing in Cuba, despite its late introduction. The team coaches remain committed to this endeavor, reinforcing their collective determination to excel in this sport.
