The eruption has resulted in ash clouds soaring to 7,000 meters above sea level, affecting areas up to 50 kilometers away in multiple directions. The National Coordinating Agency for Disaster Reduction (Conred) has declared an institutional orange alert, facilitating ongoing communication with local leaders to coordinate both precautionary and responsive actions.
In total, over 900 individuals have been evacuated as a safety measure against ash fall, with predictions that approximately 30,000 more people may be at risk. In light of the eruption, educational activities have been suspended across four municipalities to safeguard students and residents.
As one of Guatemala’s most active volcanoes, alongside 32 others in the region, the Volcano de Fuego stands 3,763 meters high. Following a 50-day dormancy period, it erupted anew this weekend; its last significant eruption led to over 400 fatalities in June 2018.
