Kremlin Expects Updates from US on Ukraine Negotiations in Saudi Arabia

The Kremlin is waiting for the United States to share updates on the Ukraine-U.S. talks in Saudi Arabia, according to spokesman Dmitry Peskov. U.S. Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff, despite missing the Jeddah discussions, plans to meet with Russian President Putin after these talks, underscoring his role in the negotiations.

Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the Kremlin, announced that Moscow anticipates receiving updates from Washington regarding the ongoing negotiations between Ukraine and the United States in Saudi Arabia. This announcement came on March 11, as discussions continued between delegations from both nations in Jeddah.

Peskov indicated that “Today, there will be U.S.-Ukraine contacts in Jeddah. Somehow, the American side, which is looking for ways to reach a peaceful settlement, will inform us” when queried about a potential meeting involving Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff.

Witkoff was expected to participate in the talks in Saudi Arabia but was unable to attend. However, reports suggest that he plans to visit Moscow for discussions with Putin subsequent to the March 11 dialogues between the U.S. and Ukrainian officials in Jeddah. He will accompany U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz during these engagements.

Although Witkoff is officially recognized as Trump’s Middle East envoy, he has emerged as a significant player in the negotiations concerning Russia and Ukraine, having participated in earlier discussions with Russian representatives on February 18 in Saudi Arabia, which did not involve Ukraine.

In summary, the Kremlin is expecting updates from the United States concerning the ongoing Ukraine-U.S. negotiations in Saudi Arabia. Peskov’s statements highlight the ongoing diplomatic efforts, and Witkoff’s anticipated visit to Moscow signifies the importance of these talks amidst the complex geopolitical scenario in the region. As negotiations evolve, the role of intermediaries like Witkoff remains crucial in shaping dialogue between the conflicting parties.
