During a recent event in Port Louis, Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam announced that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be awarded ‘The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean’. This honour recognizes Modi’s significant contributions to enhancing the relationship between India and Mauritius. Modi’s receipt of this accolade marks him as the first Indian to attain this honour, and it represents the 21st international award that he has been bestowed by any foreign nation.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Ramgoolam highlighted that Modi is the fifth foreign national to be granted this distinguished recognition. In a gesture of goodwill, during the same event, Modi also presented Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to Prime Minister Ramgoolam and his wife, Veena Ramgoolam. This community gathering brought together over 3,500 attendees, including members of the Mauritius Cabinet and other government officials.

Earlier in the day, Modi had formally issued OCI cards to Mauritius’ President Dharambeer Gokhool and First Lady Vrinda Gokhool. This act symbolizes India’s ongoing commitment to its diaspora and the strengthening of bilateral relations with Mauritius, particularly during the inaugural day of his state visit to the island nation.

In summary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s conferment of ‘The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean’ acknowledges his pivotal role in fostering India-Mauritius relations. The issuance of OCI cards to both the Prime Minister and President of Mauritius further reflects India’s commitment to its diaspora. This event signifies a deepening of ties and mutual recognition between the two nations.
