Nigerian Presidency Confirms Progress Under President Tinubu Despite Challenges

The Nigerian Presidency, responding to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, affirmed progress under President Tinubu, citing advancements in security, economic stability, and youth empowerment. Despite acknowledging challenges such as unemployment and inflation, officials highlighted significant strides and applauded ongoing leadership initiatives aimed at job creation and infrastructure improvement.

The Nigerian Presidency has stated that the country is progressing positively under President Bola Tinubu, despite concerns expressed by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN). Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga emphasized that while challenges persist, the administration has made headway in areas such as security, economic stability, and youth empowerment.

In response to CBCN President Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru’s comments regarding unemployment, insecurity, poverty, and corruption, Onanuga reiterated the administration’s appreciation for the bishops’ input regarding governance. He highlighted that the Tinubu administration recognizes and values the role of religious leaders in fostering national unity and stability.

On security, Onanuga asserted that Nigeria is now safer than it was in 2023, citing the efforts of military and security agencies. He reported the elimination of over 8,000 criminals, with more than 10,000 individuals rescued, primarily women and children, which he claims has allowed local farmers to return to their lands, resulting in heightened food production and reduced commodity prices.

Addressing economic concerns, Onanuga remarked that the Tinubu administration has stabilized the economy, improving the nation’s financial status. He noted enhancements in the balance of trade, strengthened foreign reserves, decreasing inflation, and the appreciating value of the naira. Moreover, local refining capacity has risen, with notable contributions from the Dangote Refinery and NNPCL refineries.

The Presidency also mentioned various initiatives focused on job creation and youth empowerment, including programs such as 3MTT, NATEP, LEEP, IDiCE, NiYA, and the Nigerian Youth Investment Fund, all anticipated to create over 10 million jobs. Additionally, Onanuga highlighted increased government spending on infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security, referencing a significant budget of N54.9 trillion for 2025 aimed at economic revitalization.

International endorsements, such as from Chatham House, have recognized Nigeria’s enhanced economic competitiveness under Tinubu’s leadership. However, despite acknowledging the hardships faced by many Nigerians, Onanuga reassured the populace that the government is committed to making informed decisions for a prosperous future.

In contrast, Archbishop Iwejuru criticized the resultant inflation stemming from Tinubu’s economic reforms, highlighting that many Nigerians are increasingly plunged into poverty due to the escalating costs of petroleum products and transportation, as well as essential goods.

The Nigerian Presidency remains optimistic about the nation’s progress under President Tinubu, despite the challenges highlighted by the CBCN. The administration asserts achievements in security, economic stability, and youth empowerment, while acknowledging ongoing issues of inflation and poverty. The government’s commitment to infrastructure investment and job creation aims to revitalize the economy and improve living conditions for citizens.
