Recent allegations of Maxim Bakiyev’s return to Bishkek have been denied by the SCNS, with President Sadyr Japarov asserting that both Maxim and Zhanysh Bakiyev face life imprisonment if they return. He also discussed negotiations regarding Kurmanbek Bakiyev’s extradition, linking it to criminal accountability and the recovery of stolen funds.
Recent reports suggested that Maxim Bakiyev, the son of former Kyrgyz president Kurmanbek Bakiyev, had arrived in Bishkek via private jet, igniting considerable public discourse. The State Committee for National Security (SCNS) promptly rejected these claims, but conversations among citizens persist regarding the implications of such a return.
In an interview with Kabar news agency, President Sadyr Japarov addressed the situation, emphasizing the legal repercussions facing both Maxim and his brother Zhanysh Bakiyev. “Maxim and Zhanysh Bakiyevs were sentenced to life imprisonment. If they return, they will immediately go to prison. The court’s verdict is final and cannot be changed or reconsidered,” he stated. He further clarified that their extradition would also be denied, reiterating the inevitability of their imprisonment upon any return.
The President also discussed ongoing negotiations regarding the return of Kurmanbek Bakiyev, stating that extradition offers are contingent on his imprisonment. He noted, “We are told: ‘If you don’t imprison him, we are ready to hand him over.’” Japarov addressed the potential recovery of stolen funds pertinent to several high-profile cases, suggesting, “Returning stolen funds to the state budget is the job of law enforcement agencies — and we’ve already recovered billions this way.”
Further, he mentioned the ongoing discussions surrounding the scope of funds and resources, stating, “We are talking about how much money was kept in the safe deposit boxes. The gold concentrate stolen from Maxim’s office is also being discussed.” He expressed the desire to finally clarify the events surrounding the April and June disturbances, pointing out the public’s long-standing demand for accountability.
In conclusion, President Sadyr Japarov has firmly stated that should Maxim and Zhanysh Bakiyev return to Kyrgyzstan, they would face immediate imprisonment based on existing life sentences. He also highlighted the complexities surrounding the negotiations for Kurmanbek Bakiyev’s potential return and emphasized the government’s commitment to recovering stolen assets. These developments reflect the continuous efforts of the current administration to address past injustices and restore integrity to the state budget.
