On March 10, 2025, Timor-Leste’s National Parliament approved a resolution to establish a Parliamentary Commission dedicated to addressing the Western Sahara issue. This initiative reflects Timor-Leste’s solidarity with the Saharawi people and their quest for self-determination.
The Parliamentary Commission for Western Sahara is inclusive, comprising representatives from all political parties within the Timorese Parliament. Specifically, it includes three members from the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction Party (CNRT), two from the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN), as well as one each from the Democratic Party (PD), People’s Liberation Party (PLP), and KUNTO Party.
Mr. Malainin Abba, the Saharawi Republic Ambassador to Timor-Leste, commended the parliamentary approval, stating that it exemplifies a strong commitment from both the Parliament and the broader Timorese populace towards supporting the Saharawi people’s struggle for independence and sovereignty.
Previously, Timor-Leste’s former Commission for Western Sahara, which shared the same bipartisan composition, actively participated in the 46th European Conference of Support and Solidarity with the Saharawi People (EUCOCO) held in Berlin, Germany in December 2022.
