Farisè noted that these events indicate a potential resurgence of state repression against dissent, reminiscent of previous patterns seen after last year’s elections. He emphasized the urgent need for the Mozambican authorities to initiate thorough investigations into all human rights abuses occurring since the election, which includes the alarming reported deaths of over 300 individuals.

Additionally, journalists have been targeted, internet access has been curtailed, and military forces have been dispatched to quell protests that have persisted since President Daniel Chapo’s inauguration in January. On 24 February, President Chapo’s comments equating protestors to “terrorists” and his declaration to “shed blood” to vanquish dissent have fueled fears about the future of political freedoms in Mozambique.
