On March 7, 2025, President Nangolo Mbumba officiated the opening of the Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba Freeway, designated as MR 44. The event represents a significant milestone in Namibia’s journey towards achieving economic prosperity through improved infrastructure. The freeway serves as a symbol of progress, following numerous road inaugurations since the nation gained independence, thanks to the foundational efforts of its first three presidents: Sam Nujoma, Hifikepunye Pohamba, and Hage Geingob.

During the opening, President Mbumba acknowledged the contributions of the former presidents, particularly emphasizing President Pohamba’s legacy in promoting democracy and economic development. He highlighted that Pohamba’s leadership facilitated peace and stability, making it appropriate to honor him by naming the freeway after him.

The Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba Freeway extends 42 kilometers, connecting the coastal towns of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. Recognized as a vital enhancement to Namibia’s road infrastructure, it will significantly bolster the national road network, linking critical transport routes such as the Trans-Kalahari Corridor and others, which are essential for regional trade and collaboration within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The project not only aims to establish Namibia as a logistics hub but also contributed significantly to the local economy by involving 40 local suppliers and 11 small and medium enterprise subcontractors. Approximately N$200 million was allocated to these local businesses, resulting in the creation of around 650 local jobs during the construction phase.

Looking ahead, plans for Phase 2 involve extending the dual carriageway towards the Walvis Bay traffic circle, expected to be completed by mid-2025. Additionally, the rehabilitation of Main Road 54 into a dual carriageway will commence in April 2026, demonstrating ongoing commitment to infrastructural development.

The completion of the freeway signifies a pivotal achievement for Namibia in fostering economic growth and enhancing regional connectivity. As the nation celebrates this accomplishment, it honors the foundational vision established by founding president Sam Nujoma. The freeway reflects continued efforts towards a connected and prosperous Namibia, as the President concluded with an official declaration of its opening.

The inauguration of the Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba Freeway is a landmark achievement that underscores Namibia’s commitment to economic advancement and regional integration. The project recognizes the contributions of past leaders while facilitating job creation and enhancing transportation links within the country. It symbolizes the ongoing pursuit of Namibia’s Vision 2030 and the potential for future opportunities for generations to come. As the nation moves forward, it aims to construct a peaceful and prosperous environment for all citizens.
