Commonwealth Day is celebrated annually on the second Monday of March and represents a community of 56 independent and equal countries. Dr. Omane Boamah, standing in for Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, acknowledged that this year’s theme aligns with the Commonwealth’s mission to promote democracy and foster inclusive cooperation for peace and prosperity.
He articulated that Commonwealth Day serves a significant purpose beyond symbolic observance; it is a day for collective reflection on progress and renewal of commitment to democracy and sustainable development among member states. The Minister expressed pride in celebrating the upcoming assumption of duty in April 2025 by Honourable Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s former Foreign Minister, as the 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. Her upcoming tenure as the first African woman and Ghanaian to hold this office represents a milestone for Ghana and its diplomatic aspirations.
Dr. Omane Boamah assured confidence in her capability to fulfill her duties effectively and urged all Commonwealth States to support her initiatives for growth and prosperity within the organization. He highlighted the recent peaceful transition of power in Ghana’s December 2024 elections, which saw President John Dramani Mahama assume office alongside the election of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the nation’s first female Vice President, enhancing gender representation in politics.
He expressed appreciation towards the Commonwealth Secretariat and its member nations for bolstering democratic processes through election observation and technical assistance. The British High Commissioner Madam Harriet Thompson, representing King Charles, emphasized the strength of the Commonwealth family that thrives on friendship and unity.
Reflecting on prior Commonwealth gatherings, she noted that leaders had convened in Samoa in October 2024 to reaffirm their belief in the Commonwealth’s role as a forum that integrates diverse member voices, highlighting collective unity.
