Nepal’s Prime Minister Seeks Egyptian Support for Hostage Release

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli of Nepal has reached out to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Saeed Hussein Khalil, asking him to assist in securing the release of Bipin Joshi, a Nepali student taken hostage by Hamas. In a recent telephone conversation, PM Oli emphasized the need for urgent action to ensure Joshi’s safe return, as he was in Israel participating in the ‘Learn and Earn’ program when he was captured on October 7, 2023, during an attack.

During the call, President Abdel expressed his commitment to continuing efforts aimed at Joshi’s release. PM Oli also expressed his appreciation for placing Joshi’s name on the priority list for release during ongoing negotiations between Hamas and Israel. He acknowledged the importance of Egypt’s role in promoting peace through the ceasefire agreement reached between the two parties.

Additionally, PM Oli invited President Khalil to participate in the Sagarmatha Dialogue scheduled for May 16 to 18 in Kathmandu. He highlighted opportunities for collaboration on climate change, especially in light of Egypt hosting COP-27, and emphasized the importance of joint initiatives addressing this global concern.

The two leaders discussed various aspects of potential collaboration at United Nations forums, opportunities for high-level exchanges, and the strengthening of bilateral relations between Nepal and Egypt. PM Oli reiterated Nepal’s commitment to global peace and extended gratitude to Qatar and the United States for their humanitarian involvement in the ongoing situation with Hamas.
