The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced initiatives aimed at facilitating the reintegration of deportees into Ghanaian society after their return. During a parliamentary session held on March 13, 2025, he revealed that his ministry is collaborating with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other stakeholders to support these individuals.
Ablakwa mentioned that the proposed support includes vocational training and additional resources for livelihood enhancement. “The Ministry is in discussion with NADMO and other partners, including the International Organisation for Migration, to extend support in reintegration and providing additional sources of livelihood to our compatriots upon arrival,” he stated.
In addition to vocational training, psychological support will be offered to help deportees adjust back into society and feel a sense of belonging. Ablakwa emphasized, “Options include arranging skills training, microfinancing opportunities, and psychological support to help individuals reintegrate into society and rebuild their livelihoods.”
He also stated that the ministry would coordinate efforts with local authorities and communities to ensure returning individuals receive the necessary support. The minister reassured the House that, following evaluations, the deportees pose no threats to national security. He addressed concerns regarding the deportation of 150 Ghanaians by the US government, asserting, “These are hardworking, decent people.”
The cost of deportation for these individuals is being covered by the US government. Ablakwa reiterated his commitment to upholding their dignity and ensuring a smooth transition back into Ghanaian communities.
