The General Company for Communications and Information, under the Ministry, will oversee the installation of the fourth submarine cable, which spans 2,000 kilometers and incorporates 24 pairs of optical fibers.
This strategic project is designed to increase Iraq’s internet capacity by over 700 terabytes and connect the country to Europe via Turkey, while also linking the Gulf region to the global telecommunications network. Al-Yasiri declared that the project is anticipated to be operational by 2027 and is part of broader efforts to position Iraq as a key regional corridor for telecommunications between the Gulf, Asia, and Europe.
In her remarks, Al-Yasiri pointed out that these projects are instrumental in bolstering state revenues, enhancing security, and promoting economic stability by attracting international partnerships. Nasser bin Hamad Nasser Al Thani, CEO of Ooredoo Group, expressed pride in this collaboration, indicating the company’s confidence in the Iraqi market and their commitment to ongoing investments in telecommunications and submarine cable projects.
Al Thani elucidated that Iraq’s strategic location confers a competitive edge in telecommunications and digital infrastructure. The group intends to expand beyond simple submarine cable operations by collaborating with global companies and focusing on innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence and data services that align with global industry trends. This partnership aims to enhance Iraq’s investment climate, encouraging international companies to establish data centers and improve service quality to users.
