MSF Criticizes UN Security Council Indifference Towards Sudan Crisis

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) condemned the United Nations Security Council’s inaction on Sudan’s ongoing war during a recent meeting, where Secretary General Christopher Lockyear outlined the severe suffering of the Sudanese people. He criticized the Security Council for its ineffective responses to the crisis that has led to widespread violence, displacement, and starvation.

During a recent United Nations Security Council meeting, the international medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) expressed its deep concern over the situation in Sudan, which has persisted for nearly two years due to ongoing conflict. MSF’s Secretary General, Christopher Lockyear, stated that Sudanese citizens have faced “indifference and inaction” amidst relentless violence that has resulted in widespread devastation, displacement, and significant loss of life.

Since April 2023, a violent struggle has erupted between Sudan’s army, led by General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhane, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), headed by General Mohamed Hamdane Dagalo. Lockyear emphasized that this conflict represents a war on the populace, worsening day by day, as the factions involved not only fail to safeguard civilians but are also exacerbating their distress.

Lockyear criticized the Security Council for its ineffective responses, labeling its repeated calls for a ceasefire as “hollow.” He highlighted the stark reality that, despite numerous statements from the Council, civilians continue to endure severe hardship, including bombardments, sieges, acts of violence, and deprivation of essential resources like food and medical care.

The escalating violence has forced MSF to halt all operations in the Zamzam internally displaced persons (IDP) camp, which is facing famine conditions. Lockyear lamented that the Security Council’s inability to implement its own measures equates to a neglect of those suffering, amounting to a disturbing abandonment of vulnerable populations.

The recent remarks by MSF underscore the urgent and dire situation in Sudan, emphasizing the failure of international entities to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis. The persistent violence has not only led to significant civilian suffering but has also prompted the withdrawal of critical humanitarian assistance. There is an immediate need for tangible actions to mitigate the crisis and support the affected populace effectively.
