Mushtaq Ahmed Expected to Receive Two-Year Extension as Spin Consultant for Bangladesh

Mushtaq Ahmed is likely to receive a two-year extension as Bangladesh’s spin consultant, with final adjustments pending. He will work 130 days a year, focusing on both the national team and development programs. Ahmed brings substantial coaching experience from previous positions with various national teams.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials announced on Thursday that Mushtaq Ahmed is anticipated to receive a two-year extension in his role as spin consultant. The agreement is expected to be finalized shortly, with only minor adjustments remaining. A prominent BCB official confirmed that Mushtaq is expected to dedicate 130 days annually to the board in various capacities, focusing not solely on the national team but also on grooming spinners within the High Performance Unit and other programs.

Mushtaq Ahmed, the former Pakistan leg-spinner and 1992 World Cup champion, initially joined the Bangladesh men’s national team as their spin bowling coach in April 2024, aiming to mentor spinners through the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA. He briefly departed for personal reasons, returning prior to the home series against South Africa, and contributed to the coaching staff during the Champions Trophy.

Before his tenure with Bangladesh, Mushtaq garnered significant experience as a spin bowling coach for teams such as England from 2008 to 2014, West Indies from 2018 to 2019, and Pakistan between 2020 to 2022. He also served as the bowling consultant for the Pakistan national team from 2014 to 2016.

In summary, Mushtaq Ahmed is set to continue his role as spin consultant for the Bangladesh Cricket Board, likely receiving a two-year extension. His involvement encompasses not only the national team but also developmental programs for spinners across the organization. His extensive coaching background positions him to make a meaningful impact on Bangladesh’s spin bowling development.
