TPLF Gains Control of Mekelle Airport Amid Allegations of Violence Against Civilians

The TPLF faction has reportedly taken control of Mekelle’s airport, while Getachew Reda has fled to Addis Ababa amid allegations of military actions against civilians. Eritrea’s Minister of Information criticized claims of imminent war with Ethiopia, asserting that Tigray should not be the conflict zone.

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) faction led by Debretsion Gebremicael has allegedly gained control of the Alula Aba Nega airport in Mekelle, according to the pro-Eritrean news outlet, TesfaNews. Reports also suggest that Getachew Reda has fled to Addis Ababa. This information remains unverified by other sources.

In a recent social media post, Getachew Reda claimed that Debretsion’s loyal generals are conducting military actions against civilians, with incidents occurring in Adigudom and Mekelle. He indicated that civilians protesting against these maneuvers have been randomly shot at, resulting in numerous casualties. Furthermore, he alleges the involvement of “external forces” in the aggression towards the interim government.

The Ethiopian government has yet to issue a statement regarding the events transpiring in Tigray. Meanwhile, Eritrea’s Information Minister, Yemane Gebremeskel, addressed Tsadkan Gebretensae’s article in African Report, which suggested a potential outbreak of war between Eritrea and Ethiopia, asserting that Tigray should not serve as the battleground for such conflict.

Gebremeskel criticized Tsadkan, claiming he has long supported an aggressive agenda towards Eritrea, particularly regarding the annexation of the strategic port of Assab. He characterized Tsadkan’s assertions of impending war preparations as indicative of a war-mongering strategy and denounced the perpetuation of hostility narratives against Eritrea.

Furthermore, Yemane Gebremeskel accused Tsadkan of hypocrisy, suggesting his calls for peace are veiled intentions to incite conflict while promoting a narrative that perpetuates enmity with Eritrea’s neighbors.

In summary, the TPLF faction under Debretsion Gebremicael has reportedly captured strategic locations in Mekelle, with associated accusations of violence against civilians. Getachew Reda’s flight to Addis Ababa and allegations of external interference complicate the situation further. The Ethiopian government’s response remains pending, while Eritrea maintains its stance against perceived aggression from Ethiopia, emphasizing the need for peace without allowing Tigray to be a battleground.
