Undersecretary for Justice Andrea Delmastro conducted a notable visit to Mexico from March 6 to March 9. During his time in Mexico, he engaged in discussions with several key officials, including the Minister of Gobernación, Rosa Icela Rodriguez, and other undersecretaries overseeing governance, security, and foreign affairs. Additionally, he met with the President of the Court of Justice of Mexico City and the Commander of the National Guard.
At the conclusion of his meeting with the Ministry of Security, Delmastro formalized a Declaration of Intent. This agreement, established between the Italian Ministry of Justice, the Mexican Ministry of Security, and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (Unicri), is designed to enhance collaboration in combating organized crime, managing criminal justice, and addressing extortion and corruption. This cooperation will be facilitated by Unicri, which previously engaged with Mexican authorities in December 2024.
The culmination of Undersecretary Delmastro’s mission included a visit to the women’s federal penitentiary in Morelos, followed by a working lunch at the Istituto Mexicano para la Justicia (Imjus), which is also a participant in the signed letter of intent.
Undersecretary Delmastro remarked, “My second mission to Mexico was aimed at agreeing with the new Mexican government authorities on the path to further strengthen the already solid cooperation between the two countries… Mexico is a stable democracy and a reliable partner,” highlighting Italy’s commitment to enhancing their partnership in addressing organized crime and justice-related issues.
