UNITEL and Ericsson Transform Angola’s Telecommunications Landscape Through Network Modernization

UNITEL has partnered with Ericsson to modernize its network in Angola, introducing Enhanced Mobile Broadband and Fixed Wireless Access services crucial for economic growth. The upgrade features Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core, allowing integration of 4G and 5G technologies while enhancing voice and data services. This initiative is expected to improve connectivity and drive economic progress in the region.

UNITEL, in partnership with Ericsson, has initiated a significant network modernization initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity in Angola. This upgrade is set to deliver Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services, which are essential for facilitating economic growth and supporting applications requiring high speed and low latency.

Ericsson has upgraded UNITEL S.A.’s core network utilizing its dual-mode 5G Core, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), and Cloud Native Infrastructure solutions. This innovative architecture allows for the seamless integration of both 4G and 5G technologies, enabling UNITEL to deliver tailored services through features like network slicing and edge capabilities, as well as improved voice and data services through a 5G standalone (5G SA) network.

The dual-mode 5G Core combines Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and 5G networking based on cloud-native, microservice technology. This integration simplifies the transition of legacy 2G and 3G voice services to more advanced 4G and 5G networks. Additionally, Ericsson’s IMS enables UNITEL to offer real-time communication services to customers across various access networks.

A live trial data call on a 5G Standalone network has been successfully conducted by UNITEL and Ericsson, demonstrating the immense potential of 5G technology. This milestone signifies UNITEL’s progression towards delivering next-generation services such as network slicing and other advanced technological features.

Júlio Gonçalves, Director of Core and Services at UNITEL, stated, “Our partnership with Ericsson marks a transformative moment for Angola’s telecommunications sector. It enables us to provide our customers with a world-class network that will drive socio-economic growth and advancement across the country. With Ericsson’s cutting-edge solutions, we are confident in delivering an exceptional customer experience.”

The upgrade of UNITEL’s network is expected to enhance various services, including Voice over LTE (VoLTE), Wi-Fi Calling, 5G Voice, and FWA among others. This development aims to significantly improve connectivity, thereby facilitating economic progress in Angola.

Majda Lahlou Kassi, Vice President and Head of Ericsson West & Southern Africa, remarked, “We are dedicated to enabling a fully connected Angola through 5G technology, driving innovation, and accelerating the digital economy. Our advanced solutions will help UNITEL meet the growing demand for smart devices and data usage, bringing innovative technologies that open up new opportunities for businesses and individuals alike.”

For over two decades, UNITEL and Ericsson have collaborated on various solutions including Core Network, Radio Access Network, and Billing solutions. This recent modernization initiative focuses on maximizing the advantages of automation while enhancing the overall 5G customer experience, aiming to provide reliable, secure, and high-quality communication options.

The collaboration between UNITEL and Ericsson represents a significant advancement for Angola’s telecommunications infrastructure. The modernization initiative emphasizes the integration of cutting-edge 5G technology to enhance connectivity and facilitate economic growth. Key features such as improved voice and data services, alongside innovative solutions, highlight the potential benefits for consumers and businesses in Angola. This partnership not only aims to enhance the customer experience but also positions the nation favorably in the digital economy.
