Urgent Call to Action on Sexual Violence in Sudan by Renew Europe Group

The Renew Europe Group condemns sexual violence in Sudan, calling for sanctions and humanitarian aid. UNICEF reports 12.1 million people are at risk, with over 200 child rape cases documented. The group urges investigations into human rights violations and emphasizes the need for immediate action to protect vulnerable populations.

The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament has issued a strong condemnation of the extensive sexual violence occurring in Sudan, particularly affecting women and children. The group calls on the European Council to implement targeted sanctions against individuals and entities responsible for grave human rights abuses. Reports from UNICEF indicate that around 12.1 million people are at risk of gender-based violence, with 221 recorded cases of child rape since last year, including 16 victims aged under five.

In a recent urgent resolution, the group emphasized the dire political, humanitarian, and human rights crisis in Sudan. They urged the EU and Member States to support the International Criminal Court’s investigations into genocide and war crimes, while also increasing humanitarian assistance for Sudan and its neighboring countries. Moreover, they insisted on ensuring funding for survivors of sexual violence and facilitating access for humanitarian workers, particularly as two-thirds of Sudan’s population is now at risk.

According to MEP Hilde Vautmans, coordinator for the Renew Europe Group in the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the impact of sexual violence is catastrophic for society. She criticized Europe for its prolonged inaction in addressing the crisis, emphasizing the urgent need for responsible intervention. Vautmans called for a cessation of hostilities, sanctions against war criminals, and the effective enforcement of the UN arms embargo across Sudan, declaring that protection of women and children must be prioritized and that these atrocities must cease immediately.

The Renew Europe Group’s resolution addresses the severe crisis in Sudan, highlighting the urgent need for targeted sanctions, international investigation, and humanitarian support. With a significant number of individuals at risk of gender-based violence, the European Parliament asserts the necessity for proactive measures to protect vulnerable populations, particularly women and children, and to hold violators accountable. It is imperative that Europe steps up its response to these humanitarian crises in Sudan.
