US Reaffirms Support for Guyana Amid Venezuelan Aggression

US Ambassador Nicole Theriot affirmed US support for Guyana against Venezuelan aggression regarding the Essequibo region. Following a naval incursion, Guyana is now seeking provisional measures at the International Court of Justice, as Venezuela plans elections seen as threatening to its territorial claims. Minister Robeson Benn warned against any support for Venezuela’s elections.

On Thursday, US Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot expressed unwavering support from the United States for Guyana, particularly in light of a recent Venezuelan naval incursion. She condemned Venezuela’s aggressive actions toward the Essequibo region, asserting, “We support Guyana 100 percent against this aggression; it is unacceptable and we won’t allow Venezuela to threaten Guyana’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.” Theriot emphasized that the US stands alongside other international partners in this matter.

The incursion, which occurred on March 1, 2025, elicited strong reactions from both regional and international allies of Guyana. In light of escalating tensions, Guyana has sought provisional measures from the International Court of Justice (ICJ). This request follows Venezuela’s announcement of elections scheduled for May 25, a date strategically chosen to precede Guyana’s 59th Independence celebrations, which raises sovereignty concerns.

In conclusion, the United States has reaffirmed its staunch support for Guyana against Venezuelan aggression, notably regarding recent territorial disputes. The situation remains tense, particularly following the Venezuelan naval incursion and planned elections within the disputed Essequibo region. Guyana’s actions at the International Court of Justice reflect its commitment to defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity amidst these challenges.
