Malaysia will host two major international programmes in July 2023 aimed at governance and anti-corruption. The Regional Summer Academy will occur from July 11 to 14, followed by the International Conference on Governance and Integrity on July 15. These events will provide critical platforms for discussing best governance practices. Additionally, discussions regarding Malaysia’s alignment with UNCITRAL’s Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency were held during Azalina’s Vienna visit.
On March 14, 2023, in Kuala Lumpur, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said announced Malaysia’s hosting of two significant international programmes in July. The first event is the Regional Summer Academy (RSA), which will occur from July 11 to 14, co-organized by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA) Assembly of Parties (AoP).
The second event is the International Conference on Governance and Integrity on July 15, organized by the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department in partnership with MACC, IACA, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. These programmes will provide vital platforms for discussing governance best practices and enhancing anti-corruption efforts.
Azalina, who leads the 13th Session of the AoP IACA, shared that recent discussions on these events took place during her visit to Vienna, Austria, where she presided over the Extended Bureau meeting of IACA. She delineated that the IACA Bureau meets quarterly to address strategic matters, financial status, and human resources management.
As the head of the AoP Bureau, which consists of representatives from 77 countries and four international organizations, Azalina underscored the meeting’s importance in crafting IACA’s policies and strategies related to its anti-corruption training initiatives. Furthermore, the agenda encompassed preparations for the 14th Session of the AoP set for later this year. The meeting also included attendance from Malaysia’s Ambassador to Austria, Ikram Mohammad Ibrahim, alongside senior officials from IACA, MACC, and BHEUU.
Additionally, during her visit, Azalina engaged in a courtesy call with Anna Joubin-Bret, Secretary of UNCITRAL. Their dialogue centered around Malaysia’s intention to implement UNCITRAL’s Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency, thereby aligning the nation’s insolvency framework with global standards. This initiative underscores Malaysia’s dedication to legal innovation and sound economic governance, a commitment highlighted during the Malaysia Cross-Border Insolvency Conference in February. The meeting was notable as, under its ASEAN 2025 Chairmanship, the Malaysian government is set to lead regional legal collaboration, including the harmonization of cross-border insolvency laws within ASEAN.
In conclusion, Malaysia’s upcoming international programmes in July signify its commitment to enhancing governance and anti-corruption measures on a global scale. The Regional Summer Academy and the International Conference on Governance and Integrity are poised to foster discussions on best practices while reinforcing integrity and oversight. Furthermore, Malaysia’s initiative to adopt UNCITRAL’s Model Law reflects its dedication to legal reform and collaboration within ASEAN.
