The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons is partnering with the National Park Service to combat banditry and arms proliferation in Nigeria’s parks. Deputy Inspector General Johnson Kokumo emphasized the need for collaboration and support, while Conservator-General Dr. Ibrahim Goni highlighted various security challenges, urging for modern resources and legislative review to bolster park security.
The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons has reaffirmed its dedication to collaborating with the National Park Service (NPS) to address banditry and other illicit activities within Nigerian parks. This information was disclosed by Deputy Inspector General of Police, Johnson Kokumo (Ret.), the Centre’s Coordinator, during his recent visit to the NPS in Abuja.
Kokumo emphasized the importance of mutual understanding and collaboration, stating the need to identify joint efforts in combatting criminal elements and controlling the proliferation of small arms. He noted the porous nature of Nigeria’s borders, which facilitates the influx of illegal arms and ammunition, and identified forest routes as significant channels for this proliferation.
Dr. Ibrahim Goni, the Conservator-General of the NPS, expressed support for the partnership while highlighting the multitude of security challenges faced in the parks, including banditry, insurgency, illegal logging, poaching, and mining. He voiced concerns about loggers being increasingly armed and sophisticated in their practices.
Goni called on the Centre for assistance with modern patrol equipment, advanced detection systems, and weaponry to effectively counter these threats. He also emphasized the agency’s commitment to collaborative capacity-building efforts and proposed a review of the National Park Act to enhance park security.
The partnership between the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons and the National Park Service aims to address the escalating issues of banditry and arms proliferation within Nigeria’s parks. With a focus on collaborative efforts, capacity-building, and enhanced security measures, the initiative seeks to ensure safer environments within these critical areas. The call for modern equipment and legislative review underscores the urgency of the challenges faced in safeguarding Nigeria’s natural resources.
