The Sudanese government has implemented a suspension of all imports from Kenya due to Kenya’s decision to host the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a rebel faction currently engaged in combat against the Sudanese army. This ban was officially announced in a statement issued on Thursday, effectively restricting all import activities from Kenya via its ports, railways, and airports.
Sudan’s Acting Minister of Trade and Supplies, Omar Ahmed Mohamed Ali, cited Kenya’s actions as an affront, stating that this measure would protect Sudan’s national interests and security. The minister has indicated that the importation restrictions will continue indefinitely until further instructions are provided, directing all relevant authorities to enforce the ban immediately.
Despite the swift enactment of this ban, the administration of President William Ruto has not publicly addressed the situation. Kenya supplies Sudan with various essential goods, including agricultural products such as tea, food items, and pharmaceuticals, making the significance of this ban considerable.
The RSF, in conjunction with other rebel factions, previously signed a political charter on February 22 in Nairobi, establishing a rival administration to the current Sudanese government. Soon after the charter’s endorsement, Sudan’s Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hussein Al Fadil, warned about the impending ban on imports from Kenya.
In a press conference on February 24, Al Fadil detailed Sudan’s plans to file a formal complaint with the African Union and other international bodies, urging serious consequences for Kenya’s actions. He highlighted that these actions interfere with Sudan’s internal affairs and pose risks to the nation’s security and stability. Furthermore, he mentioned that the Sudanese government may impose economic sanctions, including the import ban on Kenyan goods, to address these issues.
