Tropical Cyclone Jude has wreaked havoc in Mozambique and Malawi, resulting in the tragic loss of at least nine lives. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction in Mozambique confirmed that six fatalities were recorded, alongside 20 injuries and the displacement of over 9,525 individuals across the northern provinces of Nampula and Niasa, as well as the central province of Zambezia.

In Malawi, the cyclone has claimed three lives, with approximately 20,000 people rendered homeless, particularly in the southern region where severe flooding occurred. Chiphiliro Khamula, a spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, reported that those affected are currently being housed in evacuation centers.

Cyclone Jude made landfall in northern Mozambique early Sunday, later moving into southern Malawi, and causing significant flooding that persisted from Monday to Wednesday. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has indicated that relief efforts are facing challenges due to the destruction of roads and bridges.

This recent cyclone comes on the heels of Cyclone Chido, which struck both countries in December, resulting in the deaths of 73 individuals in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi. Immediate response and support are essential for the affected communities as they begin to navigate the aftermath of this natural disaster.
