United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres convened with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on Friday at Yunus’s office prior to departing for Cox’s Bazar to visit a Rohingya refugee camp. This trip followed Guterres’s arrival in Bangladesh the previous day, prompted by an invitation extended by Yunus for a four-day state visit.

Guterres’s itinerary included a meeting with Foreign Advisor Touhid Hossain and a series of events scheduled for the next two days. As outlined by Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, activities on Friday and Saturday would encompass significant engagements highlighting the UN’s humanitarian efforts.

In Cox’s Bazar, Guterres is slated to inaugurate a project at the local airport, visit a climate refugee center, and launch a model mosque. Notably, he will attend a campaign focused on Rohingya children and engage with a presentation concerning nutrition and support initiatives for the refugees.

A highly anticipated event will be the Iftar gathering with approximately 100,000 Rohingya refugees, organized by Yunus, where Guterres will break fast alongside the attendees. Following this, he will observe a cultural performance at the Rohingya Cultural Centre.

Guterres’s following day in Dhaka is expected to be filled with engagements, including visits to the UN office and meetings with the National Consensus Commission and civil society representatives, culminating in a press conference later in the afternoon. To honor Guterres’s visit, the Chief Advisor will host an Iftar and dinner before the UN leader departs Bangladesh on Sunday.
