The detention of Zanzibar’s VP and other leaders at an Angolan airport has raised significant concerns regarding the integrity of the African Union. Othman Masoud Othman condemned the actions of the Angolan authorities, describing them as unjustified and detrimental to the spirit of unity. He withdrew from the Africa Democracy Forum, emphasizing the need for reflection on the state of diplomacy in Africa.
On March 13, 2025, a diplomatic incident at Luanda’s Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport has raised concerns about the principles of unity and cooperation within the African Union. Zanzibar’s First Vice President, Othman Masoud Othman, expressed his discontent after experiencing an eight-hour detention alongside other notable African leaders.
Othman attended the Africa Democracy Forum to discuss governance and democracy across the continent but, unexpectedly detained with former presidents and various political figures, he criticized the Angolan authorities for their actions. He labeled the detainment as an “embarrassing diplomatic act” that was baseless and counterproductive.
Emphasizing that the actions of the Angolan authorities undermine the foundational values of the African Union, he pointed out the irony of the incident occurring during Angola’s Presidency of the organization. Othman stated that such behavior could tarnish the spirit of unity, urging condemnation from all who cherish African brotherhood.
Despite his discontent with the actions taken against him, Othman holds no ill feelings towards the Angolan people, acknowledging Tanzania’s historical kinship with Angola. Nevertheless, the incident prompted him to reassess diplomatic standards among Africa’s leadership.
Following the incident, Othman opted not to attend the Africa Democracy Forum, choosing instead to return to Tanzania for reflection. He described the experience as an affront to both diplomacy and democracy, asserting the necessity for leaders to uphold higher standards of respect and solidarity in African leadership.
The diplomatic standoff experienced by Zanzibar’s First Vice President and other leaders highlights serious concerns regarding the behavior of African authorities and the diminishing values of the African Union. Othman’s decision to withdraw from the forum signifies a call for enhanced respect and cooperation among African nations, while also reflecting on Africa’s diplomatic standards.
