Cambodia Optimistic About U.S. Visa Consideration Amid Proposed Restrictions

Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is hopeful for favorable U.S. visa consideration due to its cooperation with repatriating citizens facing removal orders. The Trump administration plans to introduce visa restrictions categorized into Red, Orange, and Yellow. Cambodia, on the Yellow list, is tasked with addressing unspecified U.S. concerns within 60 days, with optimism expressed over bilateral relations.

In anticipation of potential new U.S. visa restrictions, a representative from the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed optimism for favorable consideration due to Cambodia’s full cooperation regarding its citizens facing U.S. removal orders. The Trump administration is rumored to be implementing new travel bans affecting 43 countries, categorized by severity as Red, Orange, or Yellow.

Cambodia is among 21 nations listed under the Yellow category, which imposes the least restrictions. Eleven countries fall under the Red category, facing outright bans on entry into the U.S., while another eleven are in the Orange category, subject to heavy visa limitations. Countries on the Yellow list will have 60 days to address U.S. concerns to avoid elevation to a more restrictive category.

Although specific details about the U.S. concerns have not been articulated, they may relate to the deportation of Cambodian nationals with criminal records. Chum Sounry, the spokesperson for Cambodia’s foreign ministry, indicated that the ministry is seeking clarification regarding these matters through diplomatic engagements, as they have yet to receive formal notification.

He emphasized Cambodia’s commitment to cooperating with U.S. authorities to facilitate the repatriation of Cambodian nationals subjected to removal orders, noting crucial collaboration among various Cambodian governmental bodies. He stated, “Given Cambodia’s demonstrated cooperation in this matter and the overall good trajectory of bilateral relations…we remain confident that these efforts will be considered in a positive light.”

In summary, the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains optimistic about potential U.S. visa restrictions due to the Kingdom’s cooperative stance on repatriating citizens under removal orders. As it stands, Cambodia is on the Yellow list, and efforts are directed towards addressing any concerns the U.S. administration may have to maintain favorable relations. Cambodia’s proactive measures and positive diplomatic engagements could greatly influence the outcome.
